Open walking routea little bit of history
Entering Rúa Vieja is like opening a book
through a page that smells of bread, wine and road. It is not just any street: it has been one of the natural routes for pilgrims and locals for centuries, and therefore has that air of “there is always something going on here”, although today the most urgent thing is to choose a pincho. In its houses there is a mixture of the domestic and the traveler: doorways, coats of arms, balconies… and, under your feet, the most Riojan thing possible: the subway world of the fretwork.
Rúa Vieja’s charm is that it seems narrow, but in reality it is deep: many houses used to hide cellars, storage and natural freshness for the wine. This survival architecture – stone, vaults, controlled humidity – explains why Logroño not only “has” Rioja: it was also built with technique and patience. And it is no coincidence that key parts of the so-called “triangle” of wine tourism in the old town are located here.
Curious visitor tip: look at the facades as if they were expensive. Some tell you about power (coats of arms), others about trade (loading gates), and others about everyday life. And if you come following the Camino, this entrance has an extra charm: it is as if the city is telling you “welcome… come in, here we walk, talk and toast”.
