a little bit of history

The Hermitage of San Gregorio is small,
yes… but it has the attitude of someone who knows a secret. It is in Rúa Vieja and, although it may seem discreet, it has an enormous history: tradition places here the memory of San Gregorio de Ostia, a bishop linked to the fight against plagues (the famous locust) in La Rioja and Navarra, and that is why his figure was engraved in the popular imagination as “protector of crops”.

Architecturally it is a “baroque morsel”: a hermitage of contained size, designed more for close devotion than for spectacle. And this is evident in everything: intimate proportions, simple details, a sense of refuge. Here the architecture does not impress by height, but by closeness: it seems to be made to enter, lower your voice and look. In fact, its charm lies in that human scale that works for all ages: a child is amused that it is “mini”, and an adult likes that it does not try to be something else.

Hint to look at: notice how the hermitage is integrated into the street, almost as if it were just another house in the neighborhood. This “camouflage” says a lot about the old Logroño: faith, daily life and the Camino sharing the sidewalk. And if one day you see it open, enter with the same politeness with which you enter someone else’s house: here, more than tourism, you are practicing a little bit of lived history.
