Open walking routea little bit of history
El Espolón is the living room of
Logroño. Here you can stroll, stay, chat… and, if necessary, celebrate. Its official name -Paseo del Príncipe de Vergara- already sounds like a levita era, and not without reason: the 19th century turned this space into the great urban promenade.
The sculptural heart is the equestrian monument to Espartero, inaugurated on September 23, 1895: bronze, horse and a set designed so that history has a pedestal. And the best thing about the Espolón is that it is not just a statue: it is a garden, a bench, a kiosk, a meeting point. Here the architecture is landscaping: design of paths, trees, friendly symmetry, that kind of “daily scenery” where anyone feels part of the picture.
Fun fact: the Espolón has even had statues of kings (and has also seen how times changed and the statues disappeared). Because this promenade is like a civic thermometer: what happens in Logroño, sooner or later, is noticed here.
Hint to enjoy it with children: propose a game of “who is meeting here? Couples, friends, families, tourists… El Espolón is not a place; it is a custom.
