MIGUEL ÁNGEL
AND LA PEREGRINA

Viewpoint over the Ebro, Logroño

Open walking route

a little bit of history

If you want to understand Logroño at a glance,
is the “zoom button”. On one side, the Ebro with its calm of a veteran river; on the other, the city that looks out as if waving from the balcony. From here the old town can be recognized by its profile of towers, almost as if they were the fingers of a hand pointing to the sky: the twins of the Co-cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda (San Pedro and San Pablo) and, further on, those of Santiago el Real and San Bartolomé. That silhouette is so typical of Logroño that, when you see it, you know where you are even if you don’t look at the map.

And then there is the great protagonist of the postcard: the Stone Bridge. The one we see today is from the 19th century (it was designed after the collapse of the previous one) and boasts seven arches and almost 200 meters long; it is also called the Bridge of San Juan de Ortega, after an old chapel linked to that name. It is not just a bridge: it is the classic entrance of the Camino to the city and a “moving” viewpoint when you cross it.

An architectural touch to look at calmly: look at the tajamares (those stone “noses” on the pillars) that help to split the force of the water. And when the sun goes down, try counting bell towers: here you don’t just come to see the river… you come to see how Logroño combs its hair for the photo.
