La Redonda is the great “movie finale” of the old town: a temple that imposes, but also welcomes. Its main construction began at the beginning of the 16th century, with a very widespread model in the north: three naves, side chapels and a structure designed to be solid and luminous at the same time. And then there are them: the twin towers that have become an urban landmark. One of them (the southern one, called San Pablo) is about 58 meters high and is part of that profile that can be seen from the Ebro and tells you: “you have arrived”.
The word “co-cathedral” has its grace: it is not “less” than a cathedral, it is a shared title, a shared rank, a shared history. And inside there is much to look at without the need to know art: vaults, columns, altarpieces, railings … that mixture of solemnity and detail that makes you stay ten minutes even if you enter just to rest.
Architectural brushstroke to play with: look up and look for the stone “palm grove” created by the columns and vaults. It is a visual effect that is surprising because it is delicate without being fragile.
And a note of the present: the building is still alive and is being cared for; new monumental lighting has recently been installed to enhance its architectural elements at night. So La Redonda is not just history: it is history with a switch, ready to shine.
