a little bit of history

There are buildings that teach even when they are closed,
and IES Práxedes Mateo Sagasta is one of them. Its educational history dates back to the 19th century: the institute was already operating as an “Institute” on October 1, 1843, installed in the old area of the Discalced Carmelites, and over time it became one of the most emblematic educational institutions in the city.

Architecturally, think of it as a “safe” of knowledge: serious volume, a façade that commands respect without the need for excessive ornamentation, and that sense of order that comes from places where much study has been done (and much sighing has been done). It’s the kind of building that doesn’t need to shout “history!” because it’s in the routine: thousands of students coming in, going out, growing.

Sagasta’s charm is that it mixes two very local ideas: tradition and progress. On the outside, sobriety; on the inside, memory. If you walk past, imagine the changes of time: from when “modern” teaching was a novelty, to today, when the building is still a reference.

Detail to look at: windows, rhythms, symmetries. School architecture is usually like this: repetition that orders, because learning is also repetition… until, one day, you understand it.
