Open walking routea little bit of history
Santiago el Real is a temple with the soul of the Camino:
is in the middle of the Jacobean route and its history has a novel point, because the previous building was lost in a fire around 1500 and the current one began to rise just after, being completed in 1527 (and expanded in later decades). Result: a church with a Renaissance base, layered over time like a well-made cake.
The tower, square in plan and about 40 meters high, was built in the 16th century and has undergone alterations, changes in the spire and even “surgical” decisions to avoid structural problems. The nice thing is that, when you look up, you don’t just see stone: you see human decisions over the centuries.
On the façade, Santiago appears as an icon: pilgrim, protector and symbol. And here the architecture does something very clever: it receives you with solemnity, yes, but also with closeness, because this temple has been a point of passage for entire generations. It is one of those places where a pilgrim and a local can be together without talking… and both understand why they are there.
Tip to enjoy it: go inside for a moment, breathe and look at the ship as if it were an interior avenue. The church, in the end, is also a street: a street of silence.
