San Bartolomé is the wise grandmother of the old town
: the oldest church in Logroño and a history lesson in stone. Its construction began in the twelfth century and continued in the thirteenth century, so in the same building coexist the Romanesque that is still visible (head and first sections of the tower) with the Gothic that comes later with a desire for height and drama.
The star of the set is its cover, an authentic “medieval comic” carving: scenes that narrate the life and martyrdom of the saint, vignette by vignette, as if the stone had a memory of its own. It is one of those facades that work without a manual: even if you do not know art, you understand that here someone wanted to tell a story for everyone, including those who could not read.
And then there is the tower, with a practical past: in many northern cities, the temples also looked after security, and their verticality served to watch, orient and, if necessary, resist. That is why Saint Barthélemy is not only “pretty”: it is strategic.
Architectural detail to play with: look for the differences between Romanesque (more massive, more “quiet”) and Gothic (more pointed, more “I want to climb”). It’s like watching fashion change… but in centuries. And if you come on the Camino, it has a plus: here you don’t just pass through; here you understand why Logroño has always been an important stop.
